The World Bank is supporting countries through investments in mass transit projects and other public transport improvements. Since 2012, 12 metro and bus rapid transit (BRT) projects have been completed, benefiting more than 20 million people. Among the many benefits of these projects are reduced congestion, shorter travel times and lower costs, improved accessibility to jobs and services, and social inclusion, as well as reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and local air pollution.subject:transport, subject:urban development,consultations:topics/social-development,country:Brazil,country:Peru,country:Senegal,country:Nigeria,country:Tanzania,country:Ecuador,distribution:Global,regions:Africa,regions:Latin America and Caribbean,subject:sustainable-development-goalsEnglishAfrica,Latin America and CaribbeanPromoting Livable Cities by Investing in Urban MobilityTransport,Urban Development,Sustainable-development-goals/content/wb-home/en/projects-operations/results/2024/03/13/promoting-livable-cities-by-investing-in-urban-mobility2024-03-14T20:42:00ZtrueAfrica,Latin America and Caribbeancq5Brazil,Peru,Senegal,Nigeria,Tanzania,EcuadorBR,PE,SN,NG,TZ,ECResultsResultsGlobalTransport, TRANzg1Yjc1NTMzOGJlNTAxNjM3MzA5Y2Y4ZTI2NmZiNTI4MmQ4ODM4MQ2http://www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/2024/03/05/voices-from-western-and-central-africa-standing-up-for-the-power-of-girlsNigeria,Benin,Guinea,Guinea-Bissau,Congo, Republic ofWhen women and girls have equal opportunities, everyone benefits. The State Specialist Hospital in Gombe, where Dr. Buwa works as a gynecologist, experienced frequent power outages from the national grid, and the generators were unreliable and often broke down at crucial times. This meant that they had to refer patients to other hospitals, which was especially difficult for low-income individuals who couldn't afford the services at these other facilities. "We faced situations where there was no electricity from the national grid, and the generator was also unavailable” recounts Dr. Buwa. “In 2018, during a six-month period from January to June, approximately 38 women died during pregnancy or after delivery, and more than 300 babies lost their lives. These tragic outcomes were largely attributed to the inadequate lighting in the hospital”. These essential reforms entail painful adjustments. They have led to an increase of retail gasoline prices by an average of 163%. The naira has depreciated against the US dollar by approximately 41 % in the official market and by about 30% in the parallel market. To reap the benefits of the bold reforms and difficult but necessary economic adjustments now underway, it is essential to sustain and fully implement the reforms and take complementary actions. This is the key message from the December 2023 edition of the Nigeria Development Update, titled “Turning the Corner”. The report adds that the recently launched cash transfer intervention to cushion the impact of increased gasoline prices on the poor and vulnerable is providing welcome relief to a growing number of households, with 5 million households expected to be covered by the end of December.subject:sustainable economic growth,subject:inclusive-growth,subject:green-growth,country:Nigeria,regions:AfricaEnglishAfricaTurning the Corner, time to move from reforms to resultsSustainable Economic Growth,Inclusive-growth,Green-growth/content/wb-home/en/news/press-release/2023/12/13/turning-the-corner-time-to-move-from-reforms-to-results2023-12-13T12:27:13ZAfricacq5NigeriaNGPress ReleasePress ReleaseAfrica, AFR
